The Arjuna Award was introduced in 1971. It is awarded by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India annually to sports persons who have achieved distinction in various national and international championships. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs for each category with a total amount of Rs 30 lakhs available for distribution among different winners. Every year on 25 November, Republic Day celebrations include awards for distinguished Indian achievers in the fields of art, literature and sports.
