Depression and anxiety are two mental illnesses that usually co-exist but present differently. Depression is most commonly linked with sustained sadness, loss of energy, feeling hopeless, and loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. In addition, it may present in physical terms as changes in appetite, insomnia, and poor concentration. Anxiety, however, presents with persistent worry, tension, and fear, which usually have physical signs in the form of tachycardia, muscle tension, and restlessness. Depression induces feelings of emotional depletion and loss of drive, while anxiety induces over-arousal and distress. Notwithstanding their difference, the two conditions may co-exist as well, such that it becomes impossible to differentiate between them without professional assistance.
