The British colonial rule in India lasted for almost 200 years. It began with the establishment of the British East India Company's presence in the early 17th century and evolved into formal British Crown rule, known as the British Raj, starting in 1858. India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, after a long struggle for freedom. During these two centuries, India experienced profound changes, both positive and challenging, which significantly influenced its social, economic, and political landscape.
