The Ramayana, an old Indian epic, is customarily ascribed to the sage Valmiki. It consists of seven books, otherwise called Kandas or Cantos.
The seven Kandas of the Ramayana are:
1. Balakanda (Book of Youth):
This segment portrays the adolescence and early existence of Master Rama.
2. Ayodhyakanda (Book of Ayodhya):
Portrays the exile of Rama to the woods and the responses of individuals in Ayodhya.
3. Aranyakanda (Book of the Woods):
centers around Rama's life far away, banished for good in the timberland, and the hijacking of Sita by Ravana.
4. Kishkindhakanda (Book of Kishkindha):
portrays the quest for Sita, Hanuman's experiences, and the development of a partnership with Sugriva.
5. Sundarakanda (Book of Beauty):
Revolves Hanuman's excursion to Lanka, looking for Sita, and the occasions that follow.
6. Yuddhakanda (Book of War):
portrays the conflict between Rama and Ravana.
7. Uttarakanda (Book of the aftermath):
centers around the occasions that happen after the conflict, including the arrival of Rama to Ayodhya and the dismissal of Sita.
Thus, there are seven Kandas in the Ramayana. Each Kanda adds to the general account, giving various parts of the story and lessons.
