An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is a great disturbance in the Earth's magnetic field caused by natural or man-made events.

This pulse can be created by detonating a nuclear weapon above the atmosphere, which results in an enormous release of energy. Other sources of EMPs include solar flares and geomagnetic storms, which are only harmful to electronics because they cause voltage spikes within electronic equipment.

On high-voltage power lines, voltages double for thousands of miles in each direction following an EMP event; voltage increase on lower-voltage lines may not be so severe but can still have a dramatic effect on transmission capacity and power quality.
