A fentanyl patch is a transdermal patch that delivers the opioid medication fentanyl through the skin. It is used to manage severe and chronic pain in patients who require continuous opioid treatment. The patch adheres to the skin and releases fentanyl slowly over a specified period, typically 48 to 72 hours. This allows for consistent pain relief without the need for frequent medication dosing. Fentanyl patches should only be used under the guidance and prescription of a healthcare professional due to their potency and potential for misuse or overdose. Proper handling and disposal of used patches are also essential to prevent accidental exposure.
