The full form of DJ, a term commonly used in the music industry, stands for Disc Jockey. A Disc Jockey is a person who plays recorded music for an audience, typically at parties, pubs, discos, nightclubs, radio stations, or other events. The term originated from the use of discs, such as shellac records and later vinyl records, but now encompasses any recorded media, including CDs, digital audio files, and even USB sticks. DJs use audio equipment to blend and transition between tracks, often employing specialized DJ mixers and audio effects to create unique mixes and remixes.

The term DJ is also used as a title in the stage name of disc jockeys, such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Qbert, and DJ Shadow· DJs may specialize in a specific genre of music, such as techno, house, or hip-hop, and they often have extensive knowledge about the music they work with. DJing has evolved to include not only playing music but also creating beats, using percussion breaks, basslines, and other musical content sampled from pre-existing records, as seen in hip-hop music. DJs may also use microphones to speak to the audience, effects units, electronic musical instruments, and even perform as celebrity DJs.

The term DJ is sometimes confused with District Judge or Doctor of Law, but in the context of music, it refers to Disc Jockey. The term DJ has been in use since the 1930s, when it was coined by radio gossip commentator Walter Winchell to describe radio personalities who played records.
