Indian Peacock is the National Bird of India. It was declared as the national bird in 1963, as it is highly involved in the Indian culture and traditions. The criteria was that the bird should be widely distributed within the country, should be identifiable by the common man, it should fit in formal publications, should not be confused with the emblems of other nations and should be associated with Indian culture and traditions. Peacock complies to all these conditions.
