At the beginning of the month of June, Turkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a communique, the country's internationally recognized name from " Turkey '' to "Turkiye ".
The name Turkiye represents the civilization, culture, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way. Countries often changing their names is not as unusual as one might consider it to be. In recent years, a completely new industry has risen catering to the countries and cities seeking to promote themselves on the international level and has taken charge of how the world sees them and their unique identity.
Very recently, another country, the Netherlands has dropped its name "Holland '' in a good bid just to simplify its image to the world. Before that, "Macedonia '' changed its name to North Macedonia because of a political dispute with Greece.
In the year 1935, Iran changed its name from Persia, the name that Westerners have mainly used. The name Iran means "Persian " in Farsi, and at this time, it is felt that the country should have called itself with the name used locally, not the name seemingly imposed from the outside.
The change of the name reflected the will for the country to take the charge of its estiny following the occupation of the country by the British and the Russians.
So why did they choose Turkiye? Because in the Turkish language, the country is known as Turkiye . They adopted the name after they declared independence in the year 1923 from the occupying Western powers. Over these centuries, Europeans have always referred to firstly the Ottoman state and then to Turkiye by several names. But the name that has stuck most is the Latin "Turquia'' and the more ubiquitous "Turkey."
