The salary of a field marshal in the Indian army is a complex issue. There is no fixed salary for a field marshal, as their pay is determined by a number of factors, including their seniority, experience, and the allowances that they are entitled to. However, the approximate salary of a field marshal in the Indian army is around ₹3 lakhs per month (US$39,000).

It is important to note that the salary of a field marshal is not the only source of income for them. They are also entitled to a number of allowances, such as a house allowance, a medical allowance, and a travel allowance. These allowances can significantly increase the overall compensation package of a field marshal

In the Indian Army, Field Marshal is a five-star rank and the highest attainable honor. Interestingly, a Field Marshal never technically retires; they remain on the active list of the Indian Army until their passing.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Monthly Pay: A Field Marshal receives a full salary equivalent to that of the Chief of the Army Staff. Under the 7th Pay Commission, this is a fixed basic pay of ₹2,50,000 per month.
  • Allowances: In addition to the basic pay, they receive Dearness Allowance (DA) and other perks.
  • Protocol: They are entitled to a dedicated secretariat, an official car, and a body of outriders.
  • Status: They wear their uniform on all ceremonial occasions and retain their full rank for life.

To date, only Sam Manekshaw and K.M. Cariappa have been conferred with this prestigious rank.
