In a horticultural context, vegetative propagation typically refers to the propagation of plants by taking a cutting rather than seeds. The cuttings are separated from their parent plant and rooted in water or soil-based media. Vegetative propagation is often used for creating new plants from hard to grow or rare exotic species.

One type of plant propagation method that has recently been introduced is vegetative (or production) propagating, which involves producing cuttings directly from parts of the mother plant that are not considered flowers, such as stems and leaves
