Karwa Chauth in 2023 falls on November 1, a Wednesday, marking one of the most significant celebrations for married Hindu women. According to the Hindu calendar, this auspicious day occurs on the fourth day of the Kartik month each year, symbolizing the enduring love and bond between spouses.
On this sacred occasion, married Indian women observe a day-long fast, praying for the well-being, safety, and longevity of their husbands. They offer water to the moon after its appearance in the sky and then partake in it themselves.
Various customs and traditions are followed to commemorate Karva Chauth:
1. Fasting: Women abstain from food to wish for their husband's long life and safety.
2. Sargi: Early in the morning, a ritual known as Sargi involves consuming a meal consisting of fruits, dry fruits, milk, and other high-energy foods.
3. Attire: Women adorn themselves in traditional clothing, complemented with bangles, sindoor (vermilion), and mehendi (henna).
4. Prayer: Married women offer their reverence to Karva Chauth Mata and engage in listening to stories associated with Karwa Chauth.
5. Breaking the Fast: As evening falls, women gaze at the moon through a sieve, offering water to the celestial body. Following this, the husband shares the same water and sweets with his wife, concluding the fast in a heartwarming gesture.
