The first Wimbledon tournament was played in 1877. The tournament was originally called the "All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club Championships", and it was only open to men. The first champion was Spencer Gore, who defeated William Marshall in the final.

The tournament was played on grass courts, and it was originally held over three days. In 1884, the tournament was expanded to four days, and in 1922, it was expanded to five days. The tournament was also opened to women in 1884.

The Wimbledon Championships are now one of the four Grand Slam tournaments in tennis, along with the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. The tournament is held every year in late June and early July at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London.
