Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University, California. The company began as a research project designed to improve how people searched for information on the internet and eventually grew into one of the world's most influential technology companies.

About Google's Founding

  • Founders: Larry Page and Sergey Brin

  • Founded: 1998

  • Original Project Name: BackRub

  • University: Stanford University

  • First Headquarters: Rented garage in California

Before Google was created, many search engines struggled to deliver the most relevant results to users. To address this problem, Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed a research project called BackRub, which analyzed the links between websites to determine their importance. This concept later evolved into the PageRank algorithm, which ranked webpages based on the number and quality of links pointing to them. By treating links as votes of confidence, Google was able to identify more relevant and trustworthy webpages, helping it deliver better search results than many competing search engines of the time.

As the project gained popularity, the two founders realized it had the potential to become a successful business. They renamed the search engine Google, a name inspired by the mathematical term "googol," which represents the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name reflected their mission of organizing the vast amount of information available on the web.

Google was officially incorporated in 1998 and initially operated from a rented garage in California. Thanks to its ability to provide fast and accurate search results, the company quickly attracted users, investors, and industry attention.

Over time, Google expanded far beyond internet search. Today, the company offers a wide range of products and services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Chrome, Android, Google Drive, and YouTube. It has become one of the most recognized technology brands in the world.

The success of Google demonstrates how an innovative university research project can evolve into a global technology company. What began as BackRub at Stanford University eventually transformed the way billions of people search for information and access knowledge online.

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University, in 1998. The idea of Google actually began a few years earlier in the mid-1990s when both of them were researching ways to improve how information on the internet was organized and searched.

At that time, search engines existed, but they were not very accurate. Most search results were based on how many times a keyword appeared on a webpage, not on how useful or important the page actually was. Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to solve this problem by creating a system that could rank web pages based on their relevance and importance.

While working at Stanford, they developed a research project called “BackRub.” This system analyzed how websites were linked to each other. The idea was simple but powerful: if many important websites link to a particular page, that page is likely to be valuable. This concept later became the foundation of Google’s famous algorithm called PageRank, named after Larry Page.

As their project improved, they realized it had huge potential beyond academic research. In 1998, they decided to turn it into a real company. They initially operated from a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California, which is now a symbol of many successful tech startups. They raised their first investment of about $100,000 from Andy Bechtolsheim, one of the co-founders of Sun Microsystems. This early funding helped them officially launch Google Inc.

The name “Google” came from a mathematical term called “googol,” which means the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name was chosen to represent the huge amount of information the search engine aimed to organize.

Google quickly became popular because it delivered faster and more accurate search results compared to other search engines of that time. Its simple homepage design, clean interface, and powerful search technology made it stand out.

Over the years, Google expanded far beyond search. It introduced products like Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube (later acquired), Android, and Google Drive, becoming one of the most influential technology companies in the world. Today, it operates under its parent company Alphabet Inc.

In conclusion, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998 as a research project that evolved into a global tech giant. It began with a simple idea-to organize the world’s information-and has grown into one of the most powerful companies in history.
