As of May 2026, the captain of the England men's Test cricket team is Ben Stokes.
Since taking on the role in April 2022, the star all-rounder has been instrumental in shaping the team's identity. Alongside head coach Brendon McCullum, he has pioneered an ultra-attacking, aggressive style of play in the longest format that has captured the attention of cricket fans around the world.
While he has faced some challenges with injuries along the way, Stokes remains a central figure for England. Most recently, he has been named to captain the squad for the upcoming Rothesay Test series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin in early June 2026.
It is worth noting that England has a distinct leadership structure across formats. While Ben Stokes leads the Test side, the white-ball teams (ODIs and T20Is) are currently captained by Harry Brook, who took over that responsibility in early 2025.
