R.K. Laxman was an Indian cartoonist, an illustrator and also a humorist. He is most famously known for his creation known as 'The Common Man', along with his cartoon strip, 'You Said It', which used to be published in The Times of India newspaper. Some of his other famous works over the years have been, Malgudi Days (1942), An Uncommon Man (2015), and his autobiography, The Tunnel of Time: An Autobiography (1998). Like these, he has had many other famous works over the years which helped him gain the fame and popularity that he has got.

R. K. Laxman was born in Mysore, India, in 1921, and he displayed his artistic talent from a young age. His inaugural published cartoon materialized in The Hindu newspaper when he was a mere 12 years old. Following his early artistic endeavors, he pursued formal education at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. Subsequently, upon graduation, he embarked on a full-fledged career as a cartoonist, contributing to various newspapers and magazines.

In 1951, Laxman became a part of The Times of India, where he introduced the beloved character of "The Common Man." This character swiftly garnered popularity throughout India, with Laxman's cartoons becoming the subject of widespread readership and discourse. Laxman remained devoted to crafting cartoons for The Times of India for an impressive span of over six decades, ultimately concluding with his passing in 2015.

R. K. Laxman held a position of profound respect in India's cultural landscape and received numerous accolades for his contributions, including the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor.
