If you know any Parsi, you would be experiencing a different zeal and excitement in them these days, and that is because of it being the time of their New Year. Yes, Navroz is a festival according to the Iranian Calendar, marking the beginning of a new year for Parsis. This year, the big day fell on 17th of August.
You can see the Parsis around you (if any) dressed up in traditional attires and visiting fire temples. Parsis, according to the popular belief, come from Persia and observe Zoroastrianism. The founder of this religion is said to be Zarathustra. And according to it, Navroz, or New Year is a day to purify your souls and thoughts by casting out the evil.
On Navroz, Parsis apart from dressing up traditionally and visiting fire temples, visit their family, friends and relatives and make merry. The soul and mind is cleansed by offering fruits, flowers, milk, and sandalwood to fire. The Zoroastrians, on Navroz, pray for their prosperity and well bring. The revelries and festivities are of course incomplete without festive delicacies like mutton cutlets, patra ni machhi, and lagan nu custard.
The festival is celebrated mostly in Maharashtra and Gujarat, in India. Outside India, Navroz is celebrated with great pomp and show in the USA, the Middle-East and Pakistan.
