Well, because it’s the internet. And just about anything and everything can trend for no reason whatsoever.
Remember this half-onion from Twitter that made headlines early-2017?

Until a couple of weeks back, a picture from Kylie Jenner was the most-liked picture on Instagram, touting over 18 million likes. The image is of Kylie’s firstborn Stormi, posted in 2018.
At the time, 18 million likes looked too big to be overtaken. But like they say, records are made to be broken. And so was this one. Only, it surprisingly came from, well, an egg.
An innocent egg toppled Kylie’s picture of her cute baby to become the most-liked Instagram post of all time. And it did that in less than 10 days.
The caption of the egg-picture reads “Let us set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this, #LikeTheEgg #EggSoldiers#EggGang.”
Note, Kylie Jenner is the 7th most followed account on Instagram with 123 million followers. On the other hand, goes by the user name “world_record_egg”, the account was only recently created, and it just has nearly 3 million followers.
Very little is known about the owner of this “world_record_egg” except for speculations and information from “sources”. Buzzfeed reports that the owner of this record-breaking account lives somewhere in the British Countryside and responded to their outreach attempt with the name “Henrietta the Chicken”.
In their email, the account-maker said, “Read an article regarding the top 20 posts on Instagram and Kylie Jenner topped it with 18million. ...I saw it as a challenge to beat it... It was nothing personal.”
Upon reaching this massive feat of becoming the most-liked picture on Instagram, @world_record_egg posted an Instagram story, saying “This is madness. What a time to be alive. It does not end here though, we are only just getting started.”
Kylie Jenner also responded to this record-breaking egg picture with Instagram video, showing her smash an egg on the pavement; the caption reads “Take that little egg”.
Coming to your exact question, why a picture of an egg has become the most-liked picture on Instagram – no one really knows.
Every once in a while, such things always pop up on the internet that eventually becomes the “cool” for the cool crowd. Look around, you will come across many images and accounts who (unsuccessfully) try to get viral.
It’s about time a fly or something even more absurd becomes the next big thing on the internet, crossing to become the most-liked picture on Instagram.
