The spacecraft that was sent to Sun on Sunday, 12th of August is called Parker Solar Probe, after the American Solar astrophysicist, Eugene Parker who is 91 years old now. This is NASA’s first spacecraft that is named after a living scientist.

The reason behind naming Parker Solar Probe after Eugene Parker is that Parker was the first to propose that Sun has sent out the stream of Solar Wind, 60 years ago. Eugene Parker witnessed the launch of the first spacecraft sent to Sun from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Present with him were Hitchin scientist Nicky Fox, who led the mission, and the associate administrator Zurbuchen.

A milestone, as humanity’s first mission to reach the Sun, the launch of Parker Solar Probe was sent from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in United Launch Alliance Delta IV. And the space mission became ULA’s 129th successful flight.

As for Eugene Parker, he was reported to be in “nail-biting”, emotional condition during the launch. The real celebration of the mission was celebrated an hour later. Parker now looks forward to the solar scientist data from the space mission. Eugene Parker now is excited for the things which are going to come from this mission in next 6-7 years.
