Monkey Tail Cactus is a really cool plant that will surprise you! For starters, Monkey Tail Cactus has long stemmed spines on its stems to deter any predators from attempting to eat it while it waits for the sun to warm the desert ground. The flowers are orange and yellow with 20-30 petals which spread out in a circular pattern surrounding 1 inch of spikes. The flowers have scent glands at the mouth of each flower. This particular cactus grows in Ajijic, Mexico on canyons by Rio Chama near water sources year round.

A Monkey Tail cactus is a type of cactus that grows long, string-like roots that can reach several feet in length. These roots are actually prehensile and function like the tail of a monkey. The name comes from the flowers on the tops of these cacti - they look like small, pink monkey heads! These flowers produce nectar which is known to be an effective pollinator for nocturnal bees and other insects. This plant used to grow abundantly in Mexico and also in many other places across North America and Europe before they were lost during the widespread trend towards cultivation of roses over soil types that would support these plants' natural growth process.
