When is Memorial Day 2024
Memorial Day is an occasion which is observed in the US to show respect to the sacrifices of men and women died during their military service. From 1868 to 1970, May 30 was the date of sightings. Since 1971, it has been observed on the last Monday in May. Many individuals visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day as a way of showing respect. They express their grief for the people who lost their lives while serving in the US military. In national cemeteries, volunteers often place American flags on veterans' graves. Another tradition is that Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. This year Memorial Day will be celebrated on 27th May, 2024.
What does Memorial Day mean and Why is Memorial Day celebrated?
Memorial Day, originally observed as Decoration Day, honors those who have died while defending their nation. It's hard to pinpoint the origins of this day because over twenty villages and towns claim to be its birthplace.
Regardless of its exact roots or anniversary, Memorial Day was formed out of the Civil War, which came to a close in 1865, and a desire to memorialize our fallen heroes. Under General Order No. 11, it was formally formed on May 5, 1868, and was commanded by General John Logan, the Grand Army of the Republic's national commander.
In the months that followed the end of the Civil War and Logan's proclamation, which preceded this national one, there were numerous local festivities. Many cities and individuals have asserted that they were the first to notice it. The "idea of strewing the graves of Civil War soldiers—Union and Confederate" is credited to Mary Ann Williams by the National Cemetery Administration of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Is Memorial Day a big holiday?
For many Americans, Memorial Day heralds the start of summer and a much-needed long weekend filled with activities like football games and cookouts. However, that wasn't the day's original intent, and there has been much debate about how it has changed over time.
Memorial Day, observed on the final Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who bravely gave their lives while defending their country. At the end of the Civil War, an event known as Decoration Day was celebrated with marches, customs, and the placing of flowers on the graves of deceased service members.
Critics have countered that the celebration should return to a more solemn and respectful tone, arguing that it has strayed too far toward frivolous enjoyment.
How Memorial Day is celebrated in US?
Every year, active military troops and representatives of veteran's organizations participate in Memorial Day parades that take place in cities and towns around the nation. Three cities host some of the biggest parades: Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Memorial Day is also observed by Americans by going to cemeteries and memorials. A World War I poem inspired the custom of wearing red poppies by those who have lost their lives in battle.
What not to do on Memorial Day?
It's critical to observe the holiday with honour and respect for those who have given their lives in battle. The following activities are off-limits on Memorial Day:
- NEVER WISH A "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY" TO ANYONE.
Holidays are not upon us, and Memorial Day was not intended to be a pleasure fest each year. It was created to help Americans honour those who had lost their lives while defending their country.
- Remember the reason behind the holiday. Take pride in the occasion, including shopping sales, but do not forget to take a moment to honour the men and women in our armed forces.
- Do not give current service members gratitude. The meaning of Memorial Day has nothing to do with the active military personnel of today. The United States honours all active-duty military personnel and living veterans on November 11th. However, we only pay tribute to the deceased on Memorial Day.
- AVOID LETTING POLITICS PREVENT YOU FROM BEING RESPECTFUL
It makes no difference what your disagreement is with the US's rationale for entering a war, the president's policies steering the country through that fight, or anything else. The armed forces of the United States have defended the interests and citizens of the country for nearly 200 years.
To sum up, Memorial Day is very important for honouring our military veterans. Memorial Day is a mournful time to honour those who gave their lives in defence of others. We can make a significant impact and pay tribute to the courageous men and women who have given their lives to defend our nation by actively taking part in ceremonies, visiting cemeteries, flying the American flag with pride, holding moments of quiet, and patronizing veteran-owned businesses. Together, these actions may make a significant impact. We should never forget the sacrifices they made and will always be appreciative of their bravery and unwavering dedication.
