The state bird of Goa is the Indian three-banded kingfisher. It is nicknamed the Goanese, which comes from an old Portuguese name for this bird that translates to "beautiful man" or "handsome fellow". This beautiful bird was chosen to be its mascot because of its stunning beauty and strength of character. The Indian three-banded kingfisher is one of the most striking birds in Asia. It has a long pointed bill with a white band near the tip, and spots on its wings that are characterized as bars rather than feathers. They have bright red eyes and usually have a yellow chest band with vertical stripes.
